"But sheer exuberance is not enough to survive under the critical glare directed at today's groups. "
(Chris Welch, Melody Maker, 1968, the linear notes on the back cover ).
These words, said by a renowned critic became a sort of group's unwanted motto. He wrote about other
bands, but what about the Gun? Not many people remember the band. Those who know the name do not
seem to value it much. There are a lot of people who claim that "Race with the devil" is a genuine copy of
"Can't be so bad" recorded in 1967 by an American group Moby Grape ("Guinnes Who's Who of Sixties
Music", 1992). I listened to both tracks a lot and have to admit that there are some similarities. The songs
are arranged in a quite similar way. But I wouldn't say that it's a copy!
The album is full of dynamic, sometimes even agressive rock music. The hard sounds are from time to time
accompanied by brass and string sections. Every minute of the album is awesome. Or no! Only "Take off" .
Sort of boring, I'd say.
Many years back, the album The Gun was released in Poland by Polish Records (Polskie Nagrania).
Some people still have the LPs in their attics or sell it at a flea market. The covers of the two editions were
quite different. You can see the Polish one is in the upper left. The label is placed below the text. The
original, British version is the one on the right.
The spirit of the first album seems to be lost on the next record. The music on "Gunsight" lost its soul and
became predictable! Only the ballad "Angeline" is quite a nice track.
There are few reeditions of The Gun on CD. The one released by Repertoire is worth remembering. It is a digipack that included also the songs from
singles. So: apart from the regular material from the first album, in the Repertoire's digipack you can also find: "Race with the Devil", "Drive you mad",
"Ruperts Travels".
My aim was to present my personal opinions about the group. I wanted to draw your attention to the awesome music from the first LP. Also the cover,
that is still a sort of a rarity. Those who want more information can visit Krzyszfof's site (rock.w3h.net). It's the best Gun's biography in the world! There
are two versions: Polish and English.
